督促状 — overdue notice

Who sends itThe office you owe: city hall, 税務署 or 日本年金機構
When it arrives and deadlineArrives about 20 days after the due date. The new deadline printed on it is usually 10 days.

What it is

A formal notice that a payment is past due. By law, it is the last step before the office can seize your assets.

What to do

Pay now, with the slip that came with it. No money? Go to the counter or call the number on the letter BEFORE the deadline and ask for installments. People who contact the office and agree on installments are not seized.

If you ignore it

Interest (延滞金) builds up, and your bank account, pay or tax refund can be seized without any other notice.

Not one of these, or want to be sure?

Send a photo of the letter and get the explanation by email in your language: what it is, how much, the deadline and what to do.
